Valencia de Alcántara
This individually designed 2 bedroomed
house, sits in about 6,000 sq.m. of
land (about 1.5 acres) and has been
converted from one half of a stone
built ruin, and sits in a small cluster
of houses. Through the entrance door is
an open but covered area, which has a
gas BBQ and seating area. Steps leads
to a terraced back garden. The front
door leads to the kitchen /dining room,
which has an attractive wood burner.
The sitting room has an open fireplace
with windows overlooking the covered
A lovely, fully fitted bathroom is on
the ground floor with a mezzanine area
above the sitting room, with two open
plan double bedrooms. Outside there are
storerooms, one containing an original
bread oven, once used to provide bread
for the neighbours. One large storeroom
could be renovated by raising the walls
to provide an additional floor. The
garden boasts a spring from which the
water for the house is taken and in the
winter there is another spring, which
literally "springs" from the base of a
large granite stone. Solar panels
provide electricity , but there is
mains electricity available nearby for
connection if you prefer. The immediate
garden area is easily manageable, with
a large portion being left for
All in all, a very sympathetically
renovated house which has, for me a
lovely homey feel! ** PRICE REDUCED BY

ExtremaCasa is the only estate agency specialising in overseas buyers with properties for sale all over Extremadura. Established in 2006, it is owned by Martyn Swan who opened the first British estate agents office on the Costa de la Luz, but moved to the peace and quiet of Extremadura when the Costa de la Luz showed worrying signs of becoming too popular!
After living for 12 years in Trujillo, Martyn recently moved back to the U.K.; not because he fell out of love with Extremadura but simply to be able spend more time with his grandchildren (five at present). He now lives in St Leonards-on-Sea on the south coast but makes regular trips back to Extremadura (although not normally when Brighton and Hove Albion FC are at home!). Click here to email Martyn.
Originally from Devon in the U.K., Jakki Cosway spent most of her working life in the Balearic Islands before moving to the Sierra de Gata three years ago and now knows virtually everyone and everything about the area. She lives with her Spanish partner José just outside Eljas and speaks six languages fluently, as well as understanding A Fala, a language spoken only in the three villages of her area of the Sierra de Gata.Click here to email Jakki.
John Whitehouse is from Oxford, England. He worked in the transport industry until he and his wife Janet, who is half-Spanish, decided to pursue their long-held dream and relocate to Spain, opting for the beauty and tranquillity of rural Extremadura. They bought a little house with a huge garden in the hills near the village of Alange, and now spend their spare time renovating and gardening, exploring the surrounding area, and improving their Spanish. They’ve been made very welcome by their Spanish neighbours and are delighted that their dream has finally been realised. Click here to email John.
